Next Steps - Water Baptism
Key Scripture: Matthew 28:18-20 NLT
Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
1.To follow Jesus’ example.
Key Scripture: Matthew 3:13-17 NLT
Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. But John tried to talk him out of it. "I am the one who needs to be baptized by you," he said, "so why are you coming to me?" But Jesus said, "It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires." So John agreed to baptize him. After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy."
Key Scripture: Colossians 2:12-14 MSG
[12-14] “Going under the water was a burial of your old life; coming up out of it was a resurrection, God raising you from the dead as he did Christ. When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive—right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s cross.”
2.To obey the command of Jesus.
Key Scripture: John 14:15 NLT
"If you love me, obey my commandments.”
Key Scripture: Mark 16:15-16 NLT
And then he told them, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.
3.To demonstrate the change that’s occurred within our lives.
Key Scripture: 1 Peter 3:21 MSG
The waters of baptism do that for you, not by washing away dirt from your skin but by presenting you through Jesus' resurrection before God with a clear conscience.
4.To make a public declaration of the commitment we’ve made.
Key Scripture: Matthew 10:32-33 NLT
"Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
Key Scripture: Acts 2:41 NLT
Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day-about 3,000 in all.
Key Scripture: Acts 8:12-13 NLT
But now the people believed Philip's message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized. Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed.
Key Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
