Maybe you’ve seen someone get baptised—going under the water and coming back up—and wondered, “What does that mean? Should I do it too?”
Baptism is a big step in following Jesus. It doesn’t mean you’ve got it all together. It’s simply a way of saying, “Jesus has changed my life—and I’m not turning back.”
Baptism Doesn’t Save You—Jesus Does
Let’s be clear: baptism doesn’t earn salvation. Only Jesus can save us. But baptism is a powerful response to what He’s already done in your heart.
“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.”
—Ephesians 2:8 (NLT)
It’s not about religion—it’s about obedience. It’s a way of going public with your faith.
It’s a Picture of a New Life
When you’re baptised, you go under the water and then come back up. It’s a powerful picture of what has happened spiritually:
• Your old life is buried
• You’ve been washed clean
• You now walk in new life with Jesus
“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead… we also may live new lives.”
—Romans 6:4 (NLT)
It’s an outward symbol of an inward change.
Even Jesus Was Baptised
Jesus didn’t need to be baptised—but He chose to be. He wanted to model obedience and identify with us. When He was baptised, the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit came down, and the Father said:
“This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
—Matthew 3:17 (NLT)
If Jesus did it, we should too.
Who Should Be Baptised?
The Bible shows us that baptism comes after you put your faith in Jesus. It’s for believers—those who have trusted Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
“Those who believed what Peter said were baptised and added to the church that day…”
—Acts 2:41 (NLT)
If you’ve decided to follow Jesus, baptism is your next step.
Final Thought
Baptism doesn’t make you a Christian—but it shows that you are one. It’s a step of obedience, a celebration of new life, and a public declaration that you belong to Jesus.
Are you ready to take that step?
