We know that baptism can raise a lot of questions—especially if it’s your first time hearing about it or considering it. Here are some clear answers based on what the Bible teaches to help you understand what baptism means and why it matters.
What Is Water Baptism?
Baptism is a public, outward expression of an inward transformation. It symbolises your identification with:
• The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus
• A new life in Christ
• Your commitment to follow Him
Why Should I Be Baptised?
Jesus commanded it (Matthew 28:19). The early church practised it. And if you love Jesus, it’s a step you’ll want to take. Baptism is not what saves you, but it shows the world that Jesus has saved you.
Who Should Be Baptised?
Anyone who has made a personal decision to follow Jesus. In the Bible, those who were baptised had heard and responded to the gospel—so we baptise believers, not infants. Children are encouraged to be dedicated, and older children may be baptised if they understand and believe.
In Whose Name Are We Baptised?
We baptise in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, just as Jesus instructed.
Is Baptism Required To Be A Christian?
No—but it’s a vital act of obedience. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8–9). Baptism is how we go public with that decision.
How It Works at Gateway
Baptisms happen during our Sunday in-person worship gatherings, so your church family and loved ones can celebrate with you.
Before your baptism, you’ll be asked to write and share a short testimony of how Jesus has changed your life. Then you’ll be prayed for, baptised, and celebrated!
Pastor Luke will say:
“On the confession of your repentance towards God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, I baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

How To Write Your Testimony (Your Story)
Your story is powerful. It’s a personal way to show what Jesus has done in your life—and it can encourage others to take a step toward Him too. When writing your testimony, keep it simple and heartfelt. Focus on these three parts:
Life Before Jesus
Share what life was like before you gave your heart to Him. What were you searching for? How did you feel—empty, lost, anxious, without purpose?
Encountering Jesus
Describe how you came to know Him. What opened your eyes to His love? When did you realise you needed Him? Briefly explain how you made the decision to follow Him.
Life With Jesus
Talk about the difference Jesus has made in your life. How has He changed your heart, your outlook, or your purpose? Use simple, relatable language—your story is a testimony to His grace.
