If God is good and powerful, why is there so much evil in the world?
It’s a fair question—and it leads to a deeper one: Who is the devil, and what role does he play?
Here’s what the Bible teaches: there is a real spiritual enemy, but Jesus has already won the victory.
The Devil Is Real—but Not Equal to God
The devil, also called Satan, is not a cartoon character or a myth. He’s a fallen angel who rebelled against God and now opposes His work in the world.
But remember: the devil is not God’s equal opposite.
He is created. God is eternal.
He is limited. God is all-powerful.
“Your great enemy the devil… prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”
—1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)
His Goal Is to Steal, Kill, and Destroy
The devil’s purpose is always the same: to lead people away from God’s truth and love—through lies, temptation, fear, pride, and sin.
“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
—John 10:10 (NLT)
But Jesus came to set us free from his grip—and give us a new life.
Jesus Has Defeated Him
The good news? The devil is a defeated enemy. Jesus conquered sin, death, and darkness at the cross.
“He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.”
—Colossians 2:15 (NLT)
When you belong to Jesus, you don’t have to live in fear. You have authority in His name.
We Stand in Truth, Not Fear
Yes, we’re in a spiritual battle. But we don’t fight alone or in our own strength. God gives us what we need to stand strong.
“So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
—James 4:7 (NLT)
Final Thought
The devil is real—but Jesus is greater.
You don’t need to be afraid. You just need to walk in the truth, trust in Jesus, and know that victory is already yours in Him.
